Rafi Mohammed
Rafi Mohammed has vast experience in the broadcasting world having started more than two decades ago under the watchful eyes of his illustrious uncle Moean Mohammed on the first ever radio station that dedicated at that time just a few hours a day to Indian programming. In fact, he comes from a family that pioneered both Radio and Television Indian programming, with his father Kamaluddin being the first East Indian announcer in Trinidad.
Both uncles Moean and Sham started television broadcast with Indian Variety and Mastana Bahar. Rafi took over being producer of Indian Variety on the state televsion TTT until its closure three years ago. He now produces a similar show called “The Indian Cultural Hour”, the show is dedicated to the promotion of local Indian talent.
Rafi is best known though for his efforts in promoting local stage events like the Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day and Valentine’s Day Concerts, which he started more than sixteen years ago.
These events seek to highlight the very best in local Indian entertainment. Fifteen years ago he also began to expose our talent Internationally to North America. Rakesh Yankeran, Rasika Dindial, Dil E Nadan, Anil Bheem and Indar Kanhai are just a few of our artistes who got a taste of international exposure through his efforts. He was also co-producer of the Indian Cultural Pageant and Mastana Bahar for many years.
Rafi now does “The Home Stretch” on Monday – Friday at 6 – 8 p.m.; and “Shabnam” on Sunday mornings at 6 a.m. – 10 a.m. on Radio 90.5FM, where listeners are not only exposed to 90’s great musical blend but provides adequate cricket and Bollywood news.
