Nisha Bissambhar - Announcer
Nisha Bissambhar is one of Trinidad’s leading female vocalists. She began as the only female singer with The D. Rampersad Indian Art Orchestra and is now the lead female singer for the band Karma - which is managed by her elder brother Anil and also features the talent of her younger brother (and 90.5 Night Life co-host), Ravi.
Nisha’s love and ability for singing seemed to have come naturally having been born into a family of musicians. At age 15, while still attending Lakshmi Girls High School, Nisha began singing with the D. Rampersad Indian Art Orchestra. Her father and uncle (who managed the band at the time) soon recognized her potential as a singer, and she was encouraged to take voice training and pursue her talents. By the time she was 19, she became the band’s only female singer.
Since her singing career began, she has made it to the finals of several local competitions, which include: Children of Mastana (1995); Mastana Bahar (1996); The National Ladies Singing Competition (1998) and The Chutney Soca Monarch (1999). She has performed in the U.S. and Canada, was part of the entertainment for the Shah Rukh Khan Concert here in Trinidad (August ‘99) and has recorded three CDs to date.
Nisha is a well-versed singer, as she does not only Indian songs but English, soca, and even reggae. This was proven in 1998 when she did a rendition of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” at the 24th Indian Cultural Pageant, for which she won great applause.
But indeed her greatest achievement as a singer came in 1999 when the band released a song entitled “The Scorpion”. This was a huge hit locally not just for the band but also for Nisha, and since then she is often referred to by fans as “The Scorpion Girl”.
However, outside of the entertainment arena, Nisha may seem shy but this ambitious young lady has always had a passion for broadcasting and says it has long been her goal to be a radio announcer, as she enjoys interacting with people and loves to talk. Though she has no formal training in the field, Nisha is proving to be an asset to us here at 90.5 as she brings her cheery, warm personality to the airwaves.
When she’s not busy rehearsing, performing or working here at 90, Nisha enjoys spending time with her mother, whom she says is her role model, watching movies, (particularly thrillers) and shopping.
You can catch her Mondays to Thursdays as she hosts The Night Life from 10pm to midnight with her younger brother Ravi Bissambhar right here on Radio 90.5FM
