The hosting of the Eighth Annual Bollywood Awards 2006 at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya, Trinidad on Saturday June 10th2006, culminates a lifetime of involvement in the Indian cinema and music industry in Trinidad and Tobago.
Mr. Kamal Dandona, Chairman of the Bollywood Group of Companies, and Mr. Anthony Maharaj, Film Producer/Director and CEO of CL Communications who have long shared common views and goals, have joined forces to bring you the first colossal Indo-Caribbean event outside of India. Through this event, they envision building a bridge for cultural exchange to eliminate the geographical barriers and boundaries via media, events, and entertainment.
In the past and even now, Indo-Trinidadians have held on to their Indian heritage through movies and more so, the songs that “make” the movies. For years Indian movies have been the most significant cultural link for Trinidadians of East Indian origin and their descendants. The dances, moral themes and of course, the songs, of family ties, religion and friendship have brought cinema-going fans a sense of where they came from and belonging to a tried and tested tradition.
CL Financial (parent company of Radio 90.5) has always believed in being globally competitive and in being involved in several industries and so in 1997, they decided to open an “all-Indian” radio station – Radio 90.5 FM - adding to their communications network. The popularity of the station quickly grew – not just because of the selection of songs that can be heard (including old and new hits alike), but also because of their programming which serves to educate and enhance the lives of their audience as they have chosen to be more community and family oriented, and have even taken it a step further to bring a piece of home to listeners abroad as 90.5FM can be heard live on the net 24 hours a day at www.radio90fm.com. All of these elements are embraced in their title “the people’s station”.
Forever innovative, The Bollywood Group and Radio 90.5 FM believed that the hosting of one of the most prestigious events out of India – The Bollywood Movie Awards 2006 – was the best way to build a cultural bridge to India and the rest of the world. This esteemed event which has been hosted in the U.S. (New York and New Jersey) as a way of reaching out to the Indian Diaspora will finally reach the Indian community in Trinidad.
The Bollywood Awards 2006 will take place on Saturday June 10th 2006 at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya, Trinidad from 8pm and will feature performances by not just one or two top stars and singers (as the people here are used to seeing in Trinidad), but fifteen of India’s top stars and playback singers such as Akshay Kumar, Dino Morea, Urmila Matondkar, Karishma Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Gulshan Grover, Chunky Panday,Kunal Ganjawala,Alisha Chinoy,Sukhwinder Singh,Amir Jamal, Anuradha Sriram, Tanaz Currim including top Trinidadians top artists Indar Kanhai and Ravi Bissambhir.
