Aruna Mohammed
Aruna comes from a strong Indian background. Her family can boast of helping pioneer Indian culture in Trinidad through radio, television and live shows.
Her uncle, Kamaluddin Mohammed, the first President of the World Health Organisation, was responsible for the first Indian radio program in Trinidad in the year 1947. The late Sham Mohammed was the founder of Mastana Bahar and the Indian Cultural Pageant.
Her father Moean Mohammed, a veteran broadcaster, was also responsible for the first recordings of local artistes and an impressario in the field of Indian culture. A man who was associated with the legendary figures like Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Jagjit & Chitra Singh, Kanchan & Babla and even dancer Vijanti Mala, just to name a few.
Aruna had the opportunity as a young girl growing up, of being in the company of many of these artistes which enhanced her understanding and appreciation of the Indian music world. She is the daughter of the late Hansrajie Maragh, a household name among legendary Indian female broadcasters of Trinidad & Tobago. Her mother coined the phrase "chutney" when in 1988 they hosted the Indian Ladies Singing Competition at the Southland Mall.
She started broadcasting in 1990 with the Trinidad Broadcasting Company and moved on to the first all East Indian radio station in 1993. Four years later, she joined Radio 90.5FM because she believes in the station's philosophy of programming that supports the emotional and intellectual needs of its listeners and in particular she believed in the station's computerized technology which is in keeping with the times.
Aruna is the holder of a certificate in Psychology from NIHERST and is widely read, especially now as the host of the very popular “Coca Cola’s Every Woman”, which deals with issues that affect women.
Join her on ROJA, and walk away with something to enhance the quality of your life, on The People’s Station 90.5 FM from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays she hosts “Psychic Visions”; Wednesdays and Fridays she hosts “Every Woman”; and Thursdays she talks about “Your Health”.
