All About Radio 90.5FM

Radio 90.5FMDynamic … innovative… entertaining …

Just some of the words that can be used to describe The People’s Station Radio 90.5 FM!
From our “hit-after-hit” music format, to informative and eductional programs, to the magnetic personalites of our annoucers, to the heartfilled community projects and the sensational special events we pull off, 90.5 is undisputedly one of the country’s top radio stations and a proud member of the CL Communications Group (along with Music Radio 97, Ebony 104, Heartbeat 103.5 and IETV Channel 1).

In August 2009 we will celebrate our 12th Anniversary. It’s been a challenging but extremely rewarding and growng experience for all of us at 90.5 and we’re so grateful and happy to have had you – our listeners – at our side all the while.

For you to get a little better aquainted with us, let’s track back a few years and take a look at some of the things that have made, and continues to keep Radio 90.5, “the people’s station”.

When we first began we had tons of giveaway segments but two notably creative ones were the chance to win a cash prize for bringing in the Oldest Philips Radio and a huge contest to win a Toyota Yaris. For a then new station on the airwaves, both got tremendous response.

To reach our listeners on a more personal level, we then started our Annual Family Day which later came to incorporate a Cookout Competition as well where contestants vie for the best dish in various categories. This successfully continues today as one of our most looked forward to events as it marks our anniversary while treating listeners and supporters to free entertainment by the Active Trishul Orchestra (with Indar Kanhai – one of our annoucers) and Karma (of which Nisha and Ravi Bissambhar – two more of our presenters – are a part of) and features the Golden Bera Giveaway – a special segment aimed at embracing the aspect of the passing on of a Golden Bera – an hierloom that’s important in East Indian tradition.

In 2000, we wanted to do something really different, really spectacular, that could become an event not just for Indo-Trinis to enjoy but a national affair and we’re proud to say that we achieved that with our Annual Easter Kite Flying Contest. Each year thousands gather at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Easter Sunday to enjoy a day of live entertainment, giveaways from sponsors, kite flying and fun, fun, fun!

Always looking for ways to share love through music with our listeners, we held our first Valentine’s Concert – appropriately called “Entertainment for the Heart and Soul” in 2001. This concert is done in collaboration with the Active Trishul Orchestra and continues to date as a sold out event each year.

Other events which we’re proud to have been the first to present to Trinidad and that have helped us earn recognition in the Bollywood music and film industries are the hosing of the prestigious Bollywood Music Awards in 2005 and then the Bollywood Movie Awards the following year. Together the shows brought a battalion of top Bollywood playback singers and stars like Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Kavita Krishnamurthy Subramaniam, Babul Supriyo, Anuradha Sriram, Amir Jamal, Raghav, Akshay Kumar, Manisha Koierala, Urmila Matondkar, Alisha Chinoy, Sukhwinder Singh and Kunal Ganjawala to our shores with the compliments of 90.5 to perform. We’ve even been associated with the production of a Bollywood flick entitled Dulha Mil Gaya. The producers sought our help in their coming to Trinidad to shoot parts of the film which stars Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen and Fardeen Khan. To mark the release of the soundtrack for the movie, which was composed by acclaimed music composer Lalit Pandit (of the former music composing duo Jatin-Lalit who gave us hit soundtracks like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham, Fanaa and many more), we held a concert in November 2008 entitled the Best of Bollywood. It featured Shaan, Monali and for the first time Lalit Pandit graced our shores and performed to a sold out crowd.

And while we’re on the topic of originality, Radio 90.5 was the first East Indian station in the country to have a talk program – the 90.5 Platform - where listeners could call in to air their views and highlight current issues that seriously affect our people. Radio 90.5 was also the first East Indian station to stream “live” on the net - making it more accessible to a number of listeners and bringing a taste of home to those who reside aborad. And we can proudly say that we introduced T & T’s first interactive radio game show “Who Wants Money” – another well-received program that has really made a difference to our programming as the adrenalin runs high every weekday from 4:00 to 5:00 pm when listeners call in to answer questions on a range of subjects and win cash! After several years of Who Wants Money, we thought it would be refreshing to do an all new game show and this is scheduled to air in March 2009 - so stay tuned!

Another endeavour we've undertaken in the past was our Roadshow. Radio 90.5 would visit different areas every other Saturday for our Roadshow – a two-hour “mini” concert type event with entertainment, giveaways and fun segments - as a way to meet our listeners on a more one-to-one basis while having fun!

However, Radio 90.5 didn’t earn it’s status as being the people’s station just by hosting these high-scaled entertainment events and grand giveaways. No, much apart from all this and more importantly, we believe that our listeners have come to love and trust us because of our dedication to being a “family station” and to enlightening the communities which we serve. We’ve spent much of our time undertaking a number of charity projects, educational ventures and spiritual events over the years.

Perhaps the most successful charity project is our “Share the Magic of Christmas” toy collection drive – every year listerners generously donate toys for needy little girls and boys, then the week before Christmas the 90.5 staff goes out to homes, orphanages and communities to distribute these gifts on the 90.5 Caravan. Our “Lend A Helping Hand” has been another soul satisfying venture for us – once again, through the kind contributions of our listeners, books and clothes are collected then sent to those in need through the assistance of various organizations.

In the past, we’ve been associated with endeavours like the distribution of vitamins and daily supplements with the aid of the Islamic Academy; and we’ve supported Ashoka Publications – publishers of children’s colouring books (Chhote Bachche and Colour Me Kids), aimed at educating kids about various aspects of Indian and Trinidadian culture while having fun.

Another short-lived project we were proud to have tried was to offer our recoring facilities to some local artistes to produce their tracks.
When we mention education, this is done mostly through our programming with programs like Every Woman that deals with various issues from the fun to the serious and our Health Segment as well as many other informative special features that air from time to time and cover a broad spectrum of topics.

On the spiritual side of things we have programs such as our weekly SWAHA program, Islamic Horizons and Islamic Perspective, and one program that we can boast of having been the first to do on radio is Psychic Visions. Also, the month preceeding Divali and during the month of Ramadan we air special features and programming that enlighten listeners on these auspicious occasions. But apart from on-air programming we have hosted our Divali Mangalam - a special puja that starts our Hindu brothers and sisters off on their pre-Divali fasting period and our Saraswatie Mangalam which we do each year before children sit their SEA and CXC exams.

And finally, we have a well-established Listeners Club where loyal listeners are given a loyalty card and on their birthdays they’re serenaded on our airwaves.

Yes, at Radio 90.5 we are a busy bunch but we love what we do because it’s all for you – our listeners - who continue to be a source of support and inspiration to us to strive for better - together.

Music, moods, magic, memories and more comes alive on The People’s Station –Radio 90.5FM.
